You wake up one day feeling lumpy, sluggish, and worse, horrified while looking at the extra 5 pounds being added on your expanding waistline. You’re wondering if it’s just the holidays that took their toll on you or it’s just you who is simply mortified with the idea of conventional exercise. Suddenly, you realized that you don’t want to be as fat as a beached whale for the rest of your life. However, the idea of going to the gym everyday tires you and the thought of pounding your feet on the treadmill bores you.

So what can you do to wriggle those pounds away, get fit… and stay fit? Well, there are actually a lot of ways to get fit. If you are dead sick of going to the gym, then it’s time to look for a new workout that will save you from total boredom. I, myself, also have a visceral aversion to treadmills, medicine balls, dumbbells, and all those gym junkies. So how about if you gonna try snorkelling or better yet, SCUBA diving, for a fit YOU?

YES! You might think of these two water-related activities as more of a vacation or holiday adventure rather than a workout, but actually, snorkelling and SCUBA diving burn tons of calories while tightening and toning your body.

Did you know that snorkelling and SCUBA diving can help you in burning up 250-500 cal/hour? Yes! Depending on the dive type and diver’s experience level, you can actually burn calories without knowing it! Both of them also promote joint mobility, and prevent stiffness and obesity problems. Compared with jogging and walking, snorkelling and diving are low-impact sports, which prevent aggravating whatever knee/leg issues you have!

Snorkelling and SCUBA diving are a whole body workout. Whether it’s your arms or legs, every move you make, instinctively compels your muscles to push against the natural resistance of the water. Wearing fins also provides a great leg workout because you have to kick harder to go against with the resistance created by the fins to your legs. Snorkelling and Scuba diving are good exercises to develop a strong heart and lungs. As you snorkel or dive your way down, it increases your heart rate and makes your heart pumps more blood. Both of them also enable you to build great lung capacity when you are forced to hold your breath underwater for a certain period of time.

Simply lifting a SCUBA tank can already help in toning your muscles!

By lifting and carrying weights, tanks and other diving equipment, diving can tone your muscles in return. You can compare that similar experience to weight lifting exercises in the gym. But unlike diving, snorkelling requires very minimal equipment – a mask, snorkel and fins/flippers (only sometimes, since a lot of people can still manage without it!).

They also boost mental health. Exercise in any form, including snorkelling and diving, releases endorphins, a feel-good hormone which can relieve stress and anxiety as well. You don’t flash a sweaty face because the water keeps you cool. You also don’t mind spending a lot of time underwater because you are amazed by fish, corals and other bewitching sea creatures around you.

The best thing about SCUBA diving? You don’t even realize that you’re working out since you're having so much fun!

  1. I never knew that Snorkeling can make you fit. You made me wonder and now thinking of buying my own diving gears. Thank you very much for sharing this.

      • I’ve been successful on Chantix for 10 months, gradually decreased the dosage over a two month period to .25mg and then zero for the past three days. And it is definitely not without its side effects, though I haven’t exripeenced the common nausea related ones – just sleep disturbance and mood effects. And now, the coming off the Chantix phase, I’m just hoping some of the mood disturbance and labile states do go soon. I’d be interested in comment from anyone else who’s taken Chantix over a longer period than the 12 or 24 weeks.
