  1. Hello and greetings from Malaysia.I’ll be doing some diving in the near future mostly around Philippines,Subic and Dumaguete around Apo Island. Can you recommend me more areas that I can checkout for some good macro?

    • Anilao in the Batangas is also very great for Macro Diving! Puerto Galera is also great. Enjoy your trip ;-).

    • Tubataha reef in Palawan, but all live aboard only.
      Malalascua in Cebu
      Balicasag in Bohol
      Ticao in Legaspi
      Coron in Palawan

  2. Hi there,
I´m considering to go to the Philippines in february/March 2013 for some relaxing and diving. 25 years ago, diving in Mindoro was excellent. I´m now considering going to Malapasqua instead. Can you advise me as to the conditions of the reefs around the island, has there been coral death etc? It´s been a long time since I saw a living, pristine coral reef (except for a snorkel in the Red Sea some years ago). Everywhere around Thailand the reefs seem to be history, sadly enough. Tried Sri Lanka and Vietnam too, same thing. So hoping to get some feedback.

  3. My husband and I are newly certified and would like to know Where is a great place to dive for beginner divers? that isn’t too expensive to fly to from Tucson AZ.

    • I would highly recommend Roatan Island in the Honduras. I believe there are direct flights from Houston or at least via Miami. My husband and I got certified there. There are tons of great beginner and intermediate dive sites all around the island within 10 – 20 minutes boat ride. Visibility is amazing. Diving prices are very reasonable. Recommend staying at West Bay beach area and using TGI Diving or Bananarama. The Infinity Bay Condo Resort is gorgeous and TGI are right on site. That is where we stayed and got our certification.

  4. Hi
I am looking for a good place to take our family for a vacation in January. I love to dive as does my wife. We have a 2 and a 4 year old daughter. They love to swim but we need a pool. I’m looking for thew best all-inclusive resort that has diving. We are looking at Fiji or the Phillipines.

    • We’ve been to Fiji 3 times and liked Castaway but they are booked at thye times we need to go :( I’m thinking the Phillipines might be nice but dont know anything about it.

  5. Thanks so much for sharing your great website! I have barely scratched the surface and plan to do more. My husband and I are planning our honeymoon in Indonesia and I was wondering if you know anything about
Raja4Divers. I didn’t see mention of it so I’m not sure if I should draw the conclusion that you’re not familiar with it or if there is a worse scenario, but I don’t really like drawing conclusions on my own so I thought I’d just ask. We are staying at SoulShine in Bali for New Year’s Eve on a Sunday through Sunday stay and were thinking of
heading to Raja Ampat for diving afterward but we’re finding that the resorts there are pretty inflexible with their dates of arrival and departure. Misool and Papua are of interest too, but Raja4Divers has the advantage of getting us in a couple days sooner, which is a plus because we live in the United States and have to make the haul back
home after our stay and we only have a very limited time before we have to return to our jobs. :( Do you know anything about Raja4Divers? We’d sure appreciate any advice you can give us.

Also, we have never done a live aboard before and we were considering it, but we also were hoping to have some time alone, and felt that the live aboards don’t really afford you much space to enjoy your companion one on one, and they all want you to stay on the boats for a full week. We’ve been on boats before and know that it’s often very
difficult to get any sleep when you’re on board with other people and we’re concerned that we’d feel stuck and not get enough rest and time together. Is that crazy? I”m sure being the super crazy for diving guy you are, you probably think I’m crazy to put myself in a place like Raja Ampat and be worried about getting enough sleep, huh? (I’ve heard
it before, “You can sleep when you’re dead” ;) But it IS our honeymoon after all. ;)

  6. I love to dives out of my country but i don’t no which country it have really good diving between Thailand and Phillipines and also for me also need to enjoy with nice girls.give me fever please.

  7. My recommend is Thailand for many reason. First, you can go to Similand Island. because its open from November to April. It’s the 10 best destination in the word also you can liveaboard if you like. Finally, its the diving season now.

  8. long trip, but all divers should have a look at diving sodwana south africa, as well as protea banks, aliwal shoal,

good learning curve for good divers,

  9. Could you please advise me on the diving in Jordan. We will be there n October and I know that they say the best is Sharm/Egypt…but it is quite something to get there from Aquaba…any advice welcomed

  10. How do i get to Donsol from Manila and once in Donsol, how do i get to Cebu. I prefer to fly or whatever way is the quickest.

I will be in Cebu in the middle of March. While part of that time will be for a bachlor party, I am planning on diving for about two days in Cebu. I plan to arrive into Cebu on the 12th or 13th.

I arrive in Manilla on the 7th and will have about 5 days to dive other locations and would like your recommendations. I really want to see Whale sharks and hammerhead sharks so i figure Donsol is a good spot. I’ve narrowed my itinerary to the following but i’m not sure if I should change it. Any recommendations from you would be apprectiated greatly. I arrive the 7th and leave the 19th. The bachlor party is the 15- 17th. I roughly planned the following

10th and 11th Donsol Snorkel or dive if possilbe I read that diving is not allowed in Donsol (true??)

12th Ticao Pass (would like to see the Manta Rays)

13th Bohol (Panglao islands and Balicasag island)

Maybe dive 17th or 18th Malapascua to see the Thrasher sharks but I would have to fly either late on the 18th or early 19th to catch my 4:45pm flight back to the USA.

I have the 8th and 9th open. I was thinking that APO may be possible

MY PROBLEM IS>>>> should i not miss out on Apo. If i dive apo will i have a chance to get to Donsol. How would you travel to Donsol and Apo. I can pay a decent amount of $$ for a private or semi private car as the bus takes too long. I’m not on a tight budget.

What would you do. I go to Thailand yearly but have never been to the phillipeans to dive so I really don’t know what i should do as far as prioritizing.

  11. Hi Julien and friends at Divezone,
Glad I chanced upon your site, and also wanted to thank you for the beautiful welcome wallpaper photos. I am a very new diver/beginner (recently started in Kenya), so it may yet take a while before I could contribute to your community, but hopefully that day will come. Until then, happy to read and learn from your blog.
Happy and safe diving to all!

  14. Hi Julien,

I am planning a trip to Thailand in 1st week of Dec 2013 with my wife and few cousins. We are interested in Scuba Diving and it will be our first experience so i wanted to know more about the diving scene ib Thailand.

    Thanks,
    Raman

    • Buddy, we are doing 5 days trip from Khao Lak to Similan and Surin national park, but also we are doing speedboat transfers and you can extend your trip to 7, 8 or 10 days on the boat with one day off on mainland between trips. You can also check TripAdvisor about us. Thanks and… diving is fun, have a fun. :)
      Cheers

  15. Hi! I’m really interested about scuba diving. I’m 30 and I can’t swim, never learned how. :-) How do I start? Thanks! God bless!

  16. Hi there:) I’m going to phuket in September this year with my 12 year old daughter and really want to take her diving. She’s been diving off Bali before and loved it, but obviously I want the conditions to be right so she doesn’t get put off. I’ve heard conflicting advice on whether you can even dive in Thailand in September, but she’s desperate to have another go. Can you please advise where would be a good safe, shallow (ish) she’s been down to 10m dive, where she’s like to see lots of marine life – lol I know I’m pushing it but turtles etc would be great:)

Thanks so much for your help, appreciate your input! oooo also, can you please tell me if there is a good company you know that’ll look after her?:)

  17. Hi,

I will be in Cairns on Wednesday October the 29th (fly in at 11.00) and will be leaving (flying) on Monday November the 3rd at 9.00 AM (on a plane).

I appreciate this is a tight schedule. I have always dreamt of seeing the sharks in action in the Coral Sea (Osprey reef) but i am finding it difficult to find a trip that might suit that time.

(Nobody seems to leave Cairns for a 4 night live-a-board)?

Im an advanced diver with a love of photography and sharks, this is my first time in Oz but hope to return as much as possible.

If you have any advice i would be very grateful?

    Thank you in advance.

    Joseph

  19. hello mr.julien

by chance ran into divezone. am stuck since days. remembering those times 27 years ago when me and 2 friends ran into a certain mr.ban from krung thep (yes- him!). had a gorgeous week on ko tao – just the four of us. went there by longtail, took 10 hours from ko phangan, lost most diving equipment, but the islanders fed us well. have been to sail rock, chumphon pinnacle, hin wong and mango bay (prettiest place I’ve ever seen, that sweetwater fall into the sand!), and nang yuan (wow, wow, wow). times nobody can ever forget. have been back twice: researching a guidebook 15 years ago and stayed 3 weeks with my daughter, last time 12 years ago with a friend and my daughter for 1 week (nang yuan full of germans, left after an hour; mango bay still gorgeous but wanted cash; stayed at hin wong where it was just the three of us plus 5 stoned locals, great time). both times met ban and had barracuda dinner with him.
am stuck in north thailand more or less since 20+ years. even if I would have money, wouldn’t return home, but ko tao once more – why not? and haven’t seen lanta in 15 years or similan in 24.

    all the best from here,
alles gute von hier (bist Du schweizer?)
    uwe

  20. I will be in Maldives September 2015. Any recommendations for great day trips? Would love to see Manta rays, Whale sharks, sharks and of course all marine life.

  21. I am planning a special dive trip for my husband and I to celebrate our anniversary. We wanted to go to Australia, but we are planning on our vacation for January, looks like not the best time to go to Australia. So I was looking at great dive places in January (not the Caribbean cuz we have been there a lot. I came upon Phuket island on this web site and it looks like January is a good time to go. Would you recommend waiting and go to Australia later when its not raining or would you recommend going to Phuket now. Yes I would love to do both, but that is not an option for us now.
    thanks
    Lynne

  22. Would be interested to come diving to red sea with my husbend, but do you offer nanny-services? Would be happy to pay about it, if got possibility to dive together.

  24. My son, Joshua Devine, fell overboard on his way to the Similan Islands from Phuket, on Saturday April 11 and they have not been able to locate him. Can anyone there help find him??? He had no dive equipment with him when he went overboard in the early morning hours. It was still dark. Any information of the area, possibility that he was picked up by another boat, could he have made it to an island. I don’t think anyone is checking the islands. Anything, any help you could give would be so appreciated. I am desperate. Thank you, Marie

    • Hi Marie,

I hope already is everything OK with your son. I’m in Indonesia but I worked 3 years in Similan.
Similan islands have a park rangers on Island 4 and 8 and there is always many boats and speedboats around. He can’t be lost.
Please write is it everything OK?

      Thanks
      Branko

  25. Going backpacking in Indonesia 3 weeks from mid July this year. Want to combine diving with land exploration of natural beauty/islands/volcanos scenery etc. beginner deep water diver 30 dives each. Want to see whale sharks, molamola, giant manta’s, all sorts of Rays and sharks turtles etc. Heard cendarawasih best chance for whale shark? Is this all doable on a low budget if we forego comfort, and where do u suggest for two-three weeks?
    Plzzzz help?

    • Hi Fazana,

Mid of July you can see Reef Manta, Reef Sharks, Turtle and you have a chance to see Mola2, but for Whale Shark chance is so small.
I can tell you for all of this creature which you would like to see where to go for diving. For accommodation also. Let me know what is your budget per day and I will give you few solutions.

      Warm regards from Bali,
      Branko

  26. Hi, there, I would like to take an open water diving level 1 course. (I have scuba diving certificate already). I would like to visit both Komodo and Lombok. I wonder which island has better diving sites? I would also like to look around both islands. May I have an idea how many days do I need for the sight seeing in each island apart from the 4 days for diving course?

    • Dear Lily,

I will give you suggestion to do course in Gili – Lombok and to dive there few more days after course… maybe also to do there advanced course and to improve your buoyancy… to dive also for some experience which you will need for Komodo.
Komodo is national park and is good for experience divers, but not for beginners because of strong current and you will need good buoyancy control to don’t crash corals there.

      Warm regards from Bali,
      Branko

  27. Dear Lily,

    • Hi, Branko, sorry I didn’t make it clear. I already have open water dive certificate. I mean I want to learn free diving level 1. So if you can find anyone can to free diving course at a reasonable price would be good. I would like to know how many days I need for both islands so that I can prepare for the trip.

      • Sorry for misunderstanding :)

In Gili Lombok or in Bali, you can find friend of mine Oli Christen (https://www.facebook.com/olichristen) He is AIDA Instructor and he work on both places.

For free diving course you will need 3-4 days, but to visit islands? That’s not easy to say how many days. I live in South East Asia last 5 years and never is enough time to see everything. :)

To go to Komodo you have to cacth a flight from Denpasar-Bali to Labuan Bajo-Flores and then to catch some live-aboard if you would like to stay longer around Komodo, or to do daily trips by speedboats.

  28. Hi Branko,
I will be in Singapore in the end of June and are planning to go diving for a week in Malaysia. I’m advanced and have 150 dives. I have been to Tioman in the beginning of February and wasn’t so impressed. But i have only been diving on one of the sides of the Island and it was just in the beginning of the season.Where would you recommend me to go? I don’t have som much time and I would need to rent my equipment. I’m not fuzzy with accomodation but I want a place with good safety and not too old gears… Thanks Cecilia

    • Dear Cecilia,
I’m so sorry, I don’t know how I missed your question. I just saw next post now and then realize yours. :( Hopefuly you menaged good diving in Malaysia. If you are coming to Bali you can write me on and we can arrange some good dive trip for you.
      With Thanks And Kind Regards,
      Branko

  29. I am an HSA disabled diver, looking for places to dive? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I have been to:
    Sea of Cortez
    Caracao
    Bonaire
    Cayman Brac
    Looking at Hawai and Bali

  30. Hi, I am planning for a dive trip to Bali during April.
Please give me your recommended dive sites for the most valued diving. I am a Swedish CMAS *** diver with around 400 dives.
By the way, I have a small SCUBA company in Thailand, Scandinavian Dive Zone. Small world and cool name!
    Thanks!

    • Hi Andy,
With your experience and certification level you can dive all dive sites here. Depends what you like to see and which kind of diving you like, I can recommend you many of them. Bali have a plenty of different dive sites. My favorite are: Mimpang, Tepekong, Shark Point, Manta Point, Crystal Bay, SD, Pad, Jetty, Seraya, Tulamben…
Let me know what you like to see? You can write me on info@ZeroGravityDivingBali.com and we can arrange some good dive trip for you.
      With Thanks And Kind Regards,
      Branko

  31. Hi Julien,
We are a group of four considering diving Komodo during November. I have a number of questions if you would be so kind as to address.
1.) Is that a good time to visit Komodo for Mantas? and if so, where?
2.) While we understand the best way to dive Komodo is on a liveaboard, one in the party does not particularly care for liveaboard diving. Which resorts do you recommend in the Komodo area for the (a) best diving combined with the (b) best creature (people) comforts, meaning air conditioned rooms, food, trips to see the dragons, etc?

  32. Hi Julien, can you pls advise: 2 of us want to dive in Bali this August. We are both Advanced PADI with c.80 dives each. We have been to Gili Islands previously and really enjoyed it there not only because of the diving, but also the choice of great food available. Where would you recommend that’s on mainland Bali that offers same (or better!!), as we don’t have enough time this year to justify the trip from Denpasar to Gili? Many thanks

    • Dear Drew, almost all dive centers are located in Sanur and from there is included free pick up from Sanur, Kuta, Seminyak, Nusa Dua and Denpasar area.
For accommodation, Kuta and Seminyak are party places, Sanur is more relaxed and family place, Nusa Dua is for high budget tourists.
Dive locations, depends of what you would like to see, I can recommend
Manta Point and Crystal Bay for Manta Rays and Mola Mola, 45 min by speedboat from Sanur
Mimpang and Tepekong for Whitetip Sharks and Mola Mola. 1 h by minivan from Sanur and 25 min by traditional Jukung boat.
Padangbai for macro photography diving and Sharks, Stingrays. 1 h by minivan from Sanur and 10-20 min by traditional Jukung boat.
Tulamben for US Liberty Wreck. 2,5 h by minivan from Sanur.
If I can help you anything else, feel free to contact me on email info@zerogravitydivingbali.com
      Cheers,
      Branko

  33. We did the Banda sea from Maumere to Ambon on Samambaia for 11 days. The ship, the crew and service were fabulous, but in general I felt that that long journey was not worth the diving we had. Maybe we were not lucky..
    Bst regards, Maxim
