Aliwal Shoal is a reef system off KwaZulu-Natal, best reached on a day boat from Umkomaas. Its appeal goes beyond the shark photographs: fossilised dunes form ledges, gullies and overhangs, with different sectors offering very different dives. A gentle-looking sand patch and a deeper amphitheatre belong to the same shoal, but they do not call for the same experience.

Which part of Aliwal Shoal should you dive?
Aliwal Dive Centre lists North Eastern Pinnacles to 14 m, Raggies Cave to 18 m and Cathedral to 27 m, with Cathedral reserved for advanced divers. Inside Edge offers ledges and smaller reef life, while Outside Edge faces the open water. Ask which named sector is planned: booking an ‘Aliwal dive’ alone says little about your actual depth or exposure.
Ragged-tooth sharks and the reef
Ragged-tooth sharks, also called grey nurse or sand tiger sharks, are a seasonal attraction. PADI’s local listing highlights July–November; regional accounts sometimes use a wider window. Neither promises a gathering on a particular day. At Raggies Cave, the operator prohibits entering when sharks are present. Give animals space and follow the current briefing. Morays, potato bass and smaller invertebrates provide plenty to look for between larger encounters.
Conditions and choosing a dive
The surf launch is part of the outing, and current, swell and visibility can change the plan before anyone reaches the reef. Shallower sectors may suit Open Water divers when the operator considers conditions appropriate; Cathedral and other deeper profiles need suitable training and recent experience. A reef trip, a baited shark dive and a wreck dive are separate products. Produce and Nebo lie nearby, but are not features of a single reef circuit.
Getting there and non-diving companions
Umkomaas is the practical base for these day boats, south of Durban. Staying locally makes early starts easier and leaves flexibility if the sea interrupts the schedule. Aliwal Dive Centre lists a reef boat ride as well as scuba trips; confirm the current fare, supervision and whether a non-diver can join your particular launch. A boat seat does not guarantee a snorkelling opportunity.
Meet the reef
Choose an illustrated animal to read more. These are documented possibilities, not a checklist of guaranteed sightings.
Ragged-tooth shark
A seasonal visitor associated with sheltered reef features. Grey nurse and ragged-tooth are names for the same species; encounters remain variable.
Moray eels
Look into reef crevices without reaching inside or crowding the opening. The operator documents morays around the shoal.
Potato bass and other groupers
Large groupers are documented around the overhangs. The illustration represents the grouper family rather than identifying an individual fish.
Nudibranchs
Inside Edge rewards a slower look at the small animals living on the reef. Good buoyancy matters more than getting the camera a few centimetres closer.

Frequently asked questions
Is Aliwal Shoal a single dive site?
It is a reef complex with multiple named sectors. Choose the actual planned sector and depth with the operator.
Is Cathedral suitable for a newly qualified diver?
Aliwal Dive Centre classifies Cathedral, to 27 m, for advanced divers. Its shallower reef options are separate dives and still depend on conditions.
Are shark dives baited?
Ordinary reef dives and baited shark excursions are different bookings. Ask which product is being offered; seeing a shark on the reef does not mean bait is used.
