SOUTH AFRICA · DIVE SITE GUIDE · Reviewed November 2026
Protea Banks is an offshore reef about 8 km from Shelly Beach on South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal coast. This is an experienced-diver choice: deep reef features, moving water and open-ocean ascents shape the outing as much as the sharks. For divers who are comfortable with those demands, the attraction is watching a large marine landscape rather than following a sheltered reef trail.

A glimpse below the surface

Northern and Southern Pinnacles
The two principal diving areas are the Northern and Southern Pinnacles. The northern area includes cave and overhang features associated with ragged-tooth sharks; southern dives include reef relief and sandy margins. In a published trip report, Just Africa Scuba describes the southern Sand Shark Gully and giant guitarfish. These are features to discuss at the briefing, not a route to reproduce from a page.
What experience do you need?
African Dive Adventures’ published requirements specify Advanced Open Water and at least 30 logged dives. Requirements vary by operator, so confirm the rule for your booking and describe your recent diving honestly. Depth, drift procedures, buoyancy and managing an ascent away from a fixed line all matter. Certification alone does not make every offshore day suitable. If you want a gentler reef introduction, discuss shallower Sodwana options instead.
Sharks, seasons and expectations
PADI’s operator-contributed listing documents hammerheads, bull sharks, tiger sharks and oceanic blacktips. Ragged-tooth sharks are another important seasonal visitor. Species and numbers change with conditions; even an excellent trip may not deliver the animal in your favourite photograph. Reef drifts and baited shark outings should be compared separately, including their depth, procedures and time in the water.
Launch, conditions and companions
Shelly Beach is the usual departure base. Allow room in a stay for weather changes rather than attaching your only dive to a tight transfer. Visibility can differ between the surface and deeper water, and strong current may change the chosen sector or cancel the outing. Confirm permits, rental equipment, emergency arrangements and cancellation terms in the written booking. Non-diver acceptance and fares need checking with the chosen operator; an exposed offshore dive boat should not be assumed to offer supervised snorkelling.

Trevally
Just Africa Scuba photographed schooling bigeye trevally on its southern-sector dives. The illustration is representative, not proof of a sighting.

Frequently asked questions
Can an Open Water diver join Protea Banks?
Do not assume so. The published African Dive Adventures rule requires Advanced Open Water and 30 logged dives; check your selected operator’s requirements.
Is Protea Banks a cage dive?
The reef scuba dives described here are open-water outings without a cage. Baited trips are a separate product and need their own briefing.
Will I see hammerheads?
They are documented at Protea Banks, but a booking cannot guarantee an encounter, a school size or clear water.
Can I use this page to plan my underwater route?
No. The map only locates the reef area. The operator selects the actual site, depth and procedures for the day.
