Coron has been described as one of the best spots in the World for Wreck diving! On the 24th of September 1944, 24 Japanese Ships were sunk by an Americain Air raid. 12 wrecks have been discovered up to now. The shipwrecks are very well preserved and are all located in quite shallow water, perfect for recreational diving. However it is best to be at least Open Water Advanced to fully enjoy the wrecks as some dives can be quite challenging.
Most of the wrecks are really big (up to 160m!) and require more than one dive if you want to explore the entire ship. There are also boundless possibilities of penetration and even very deep penetration (especially on the Taiei Maru and the Akitsushima ) for the most experienced divers!
The wrecks lay either upright or on the side. Their depth is ranging from 12m to 30m. Only the Irako wreck is deeper, at 43m.
However, the visibility is often quite low (from 5m to 15m) and the marine life around the shipwrecks is poor with mostly Scorpionfishes, Crocodilefishes, Nudibranchs are the usual reef fishes like the Triggerfish or Clownfish. Groupers and Barracudas can also sometimes be spotted. So if you come to Coron it is definitely because you are passionate about Wreck Diving, not just to see the fish! This place is really beautiful and divers coming there are usually delighted!
There is also a very interesting dive site called Barracuda Lake. It is a former volcano where you can dive and discover amazing rock formations! In addition there is also good reef diving with nice coral on the nearby Islands of Calambuyan Island and Seven Islands.
You can also explore this underwater world on a Liveaboard trip that generally combines Apo Reef, Anilao Island and the Coron Wrecks. I usually use this website to book in advance my Liveaboards in the Philippines as they usually have the lowest rates I find. I like it because they have an easy booking system.

Diving Season
It is possible to dive around Coron all year round. However they can experience some bad weather during the wet season (June to September / October) that can sometimes prevent any diving from happening. The best weather is usually from December to March and it is also at that time that the visibility is at its best.

Water Temperature: ranging from 25°C to 31°C depending on the season.
Currents: From gentle to strong depending on the tide and location.
Visibility: You can expect a visibility of 5m to 15m. The best visibility is usually during the dry season (November to May).
Snorkelling in Coron, Palawan
For the snorkellers, there are several fantastic Snorkelling spots around Coron. You can easily rent a boat for a Snorkelling day tour to visit the best locations. For example, you could go to Barracuda Lake of Kayangan Lake, or Banol Beach and Twin Lagoon are also great for Snorkelling. If you want to see beautiful coral and a healthy reef life you can visit Siete Pecados or the Skeleton Wreck!
Diving Safety

Conron is the one of the most important wreck diving spot.
I did not divein Coron but am interested to hear from people that did and discover it and also about a place south west of palawan deep at sea
I have only snorkelled in Coron but the overall experience is excellent. Clear seas and great weather too. However, whatever you do, avoid SeaDive resort which has really awful accommodation – there are far better diving centers and acocmodation all over Coron. Don’t say you weren’t warned!
do you have any recommendations? I’m there now..but only for one night…i’m looking for options
Hi guys, I did wreck diving in Coron Palawan last June 2013. It was great. The diving site wasn’t full of divers and tourists. The weather was calm. Very Good visibility down there. I did three dives. All were different. There was dive where cold water and warm water meets.. and fresh and salt water meets. It was really awesome.
I dove with Neptune Dive Center in Coron, the shop and divemasters were great. Visibility was average. Fish like was ok. I was expecting to see more fish. The wrecks were awesome! They were huge. It is hard to describe how big they are. I did 4 “big” wrecks over two days. My favorite was the Kogyo. Lots to see inside the cargo bays. I talked to a few of the other shops, and they made me nervous. Neptune took the time to explain things to me and made me feel comfortable. You could tell that safety is a priority. Neptune made my stay in Coron great!

I called up netpune dive to make a booking for a day of diving and they told me they don’t require any form of deposit and they also didn’t ask my for any personal details like email or phone number.
They said i could just show up and they will take me on the dives?
I am a little afraid that they will run of out spots and tell me that they are full and can’t take me on that day itself.
Is it normal that they take all the divers who sign up at the shop just one day before hand?
Me and my husband are AOW divers and did 2 wrecks diving combined with 1 Barracuda Lake dive on February 10th 2016 with Rocksteady Dive Center which has qualified dive boat and equipments.
Barracuda Lake feeling was the best, but wreck dives’ visibility was just 1 to 5 mt. It didn’t worth to take all that 3 hours going and back trip in wavy sea.

Im planning a trip to Coron from 3rd to 8th jUNE 2017. I don’t know how to swim and I’d like to go snorkelling and diving . Any advice on the right people to contact ? Does anyone have any tips/ suggestions for me ?
I dove there two years ago. While the visibility was not the best, I dove 5 Jap wrecks. I also dove Barracuda Lake. No wetsuit needed there. The deeper you dove the hotter the water. You could look up and see thermal planes. As you broke through one, the water got cooler. The wrecks went from shallow to deep needing an advanced certificate.

That’s over 8 dives a day for 10 years …………………mmmmmm, no sorry.
Spent a week at Sangat Island diving the wrecks of Coron Bay. Didn’t do any of the reef dives, as was there to get my wreck cert and just couldn’t tear myself away from the wrecks. Some strong currents and poor visibility in the channel, but once you are down on the site and inside the boats, everything becomes calm and it’s a different world. Sangat Island dive resort is extremely professional and friendly, well worth considering and they are also right next to the channel so it’s only a short boat ride from the resort to the dive sites.
