AUSTRALIA · LIVEABOARD PLANNING
Which Australian liveaboard fits your trip?
For short Great Barrier Reef stays, start with OceanQuest, Scubapro or Coral Sea Dreaming. For the Ribbon Reefs and Coral Sea, compare Spoilsport with Spirit of Freedom. For Western Australia, Odyssey and True North answer very different needs: a Rowley Shoals dive trip versus a broader luxury adventure.
Affiliate disclosure: Divezone may earn a commission from qualifying bookings. Fares below are reference amounts checked 9 October 2026, not live availability.
Choose by trip style
| Boat / fleet | Useful fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OceanQuest | Flexible outer-reef stays | Offshore transfer; repeated sites possible on longer stays. |
| Scubapro · Pro Dive Cairns | Three days, two nights, up to 11 dives | Ask which vessel is assigned; shared bathrooms, not en-suite cabins. |
| Coral Sea Dreaming | Small overnight trip | Compact sailing-vessel layout; choose the correct diving package. |
| Spoilsport | Ribbons, Coral Sea and special expeditions | Fuel recovery and reef charges require an itemised quote. |
| Spirit of Freedom | En-suite cabins and remote reefs | Independent buddy diving; route-specific experience requirements. |
| Odyssey | Rowley Shoals from Broome | Western Australia, not the Great Barrier Reef; seasonal departures. |
| True North | Luxury adventure with selected diving | True North II is a different vessel; diving is not offered on every route. |
Compare cabins and bathrooms
| Boat | Capacity | Cabin arrangements |
|---|---|---|
| OceanQuest | 44 guests · 22 cabins | 18 twins and four doubles; all en suite. |
| Scubapro · Pro Dive Cairns | 32 guests · 16 cabins per boat | 14 twin-bunk and two double cabins; eight shared bathrooms. |
| Coral Sea Dreaming | 12 guests | Three private doubles, shared bunks and singles; shared bathrooms. |
| Spoilsport | 28 guests · 14 cabins | Premium doubles, Standard low twins, Club bunks all en suite; Budget bunks share bathrooms. |
| Spirit of Freedom | 24 guests · 11 cabins | Ocean View doubles, Stateroom, Standard layouts and one Quad; all en suite. |
| Odyssey | 20 guests · 10 cabins | Six Deluxe and four Classic cabins; four shared bathrooms. |
| True North | 36 guests · 18 cabins | Explorer, River, Ocean Premium and Ocean; all en suite. |
Scubapro I, II and III are sister boats in one programme. They are not three different price tiers. Read the individual Scubapro II and Scubapro III profiles, and have the assigned vessel confirmed. Fleet photographs illustrate the common layout where an individual hull is not identified.
Couples wanting a conventional double bed should compare OceanQuest doubles, Spoilsport Premium and Spirit of Freedom’s Ocean View or Stateroom. Friends who dislike upper bunks should ask for Spoilsport Standard low twins or the precise Spirit Standard configuration. An expensive expedition does not automatically provide a private bathroom: Odyssey’s bathrooms are shared.
Reference fares and the extras that change them
All amounts below are AUD per person in shared accommodation. Filter by nights to compare duration, then check cabin, dive package and supplements. A one-night sailing yacht, a seven-night remote reef trip and a ten-night luxury expedition are different products.
| Boat / cabin | Nights | AUD per person | Basis and exclusions |
|---|---|---|---|
| OceanQuest certified diver | 1 | 835 | Twin/double shared; GST and mandatory reef fees included. |
| OceanQuest certified diver | 2 | 1,160 | Same regular package; equipment and meals included. |
| Scubapro / Pro Dive Cairns | 2 | 1,095 + 100 + 25 = 1,220 | Supplier reference: fare + reef/tax levy + fuel; confirm itemisation. |
| Coral Sea Dreaming certified diver | 1 | 1,009 shared / 1,069 private double | All-guided certified package; confirm cabin and date. |
| Spirit of Freedom Quad | 3 | from 2,500 | Fuel recovery, equipment rental and Nitrox extra as applicable. |
| Spirit of Freedom Standard | 3 | from 2,900 | Shared cabin; layout varies. Same unresolved extras. |
| Spoilsport Budget · Fly Dive Cod Hole | 3 | 2,504 | Published 2026/27 cruise fare; fuel and reef charges separate. |
| Spoilsport Premium · Fly Dive Cod Hole | 3 | 3,574 | Double en suite; fuel and reef charges separate. |
| Spoilsport Budget · Coral Sea Safari | 7 | 4,802 | Published cruise fare; add mandatory charges. |
| Spirit of Freedom Quad | 7 | from 4,750 | Not an all-in quote; verify current surcharge. |
| Odyssey Classic · Rowley Shoals | 7 | 4,990 | 2026/27 programme; shared bathroom, equipment hire extra. |
| Odyssey Deluxe · Rowley Shoals | 7 | 5,490 | 2026/27 programme; shared bathroom. |
| True North Ocean · West Coast Explorer | 10 | 25,995 | 3–13 March 2027; visitor passes and optional activities extra. |
OceanQuest regular rates run to 31 March 2027. The Scubapro supplier tariff runs 1 April 2026–31 March 2027: 1,095 + 100 + 25 = AUD 1,220 in known booking components. If your quote already includes the levy, do not add it twice. The operator labels taxes as included in its total fare, while agents may show them separately.
Spoilsport’s 2026/27 published prices cover April 2026–March 2027. Its current notice adds AUD 20 per person per night in fuel recovery; reef-charge figures differ between source pages, so obtain the applicable amount. For example, the three-night Budget fare plus fuel is 2,504 + 60 = AUD 2,564 before the reef charge. This is a partial subtotal, not an all-in total.
Spirit of Freedom advertises the shown “from” amounts without establishing one fare for every date. Its fuel recovery is variable. True North’s example is a specific 2027 departure on the 50-metre ship, not True North II. Coral Sea Dreaming and Spirit reference fares require date confirmation.

Optional costs and the rest of the holiday
OceanQuest guiding is AUD 20 per person per dive; five guided dives add AUD 100. Nitrox is AUD 20 per tank. Scubapro’s 11-dive Nitrox package is AUD 140 for qualified divers. Spirit’s full equipment package starts at AUD 155 / 205 / 355 for three / four / seven nights. Other boat prices should be quoted for the date and package.
Then add flights, baggage, airport transfers, pre/post-cruise hotels, travel and diving insurance, sole-use supplements and personal spending. A longer offshore trip can also require an extra buffer night. Compare the payable invoice and cancellation terms, not just the headline fare.
Diving experience and guide arrangements
| Boat / route | What changes the decision |
|---|---|
| OceanQuest regular stays | Certified, introductory and snorkelling products are separate. Certified buddy diving does not include a guide on every dive. |
| Scubapro | Certified-diver trip or a separately booked training programme; orientation and night guidance are described, private guiding costs extra. |
| Coral Sea Dreaming | Choose certified, introductory or snorkelling package; the certified package is guided. |
| Spirit · 3 nights | Open Water, 10 ocean dives including five in the past year. |
| Spirit · 4 / 7 nights | Advanced, 20 ocean dives including five in the past year; independent buddy diving. |
| Spirit · Far North / Far East | Advanced and 100 logged dives with suitable current/remote-reef experience. |
| Spoilsport | Requirements vary by expedition. Have the specific route approved against your certification and recent ocean experience. |
| Odyssey / True North | Ask for the actual diving programme, required experience and equipment. A general adventure itinerary is not proof of daily diving. |
Medical screening, recency and swimming comfort matter as well as a certification card. Arrange any required clearance early. Take insurance covering the actual activities and evacuation; a listed dive-insurance inclusion is not a substitute for understanding its limits.

Travelling solo or with a non-diver?
For a short mixed diver/snorkeller trip, compare the actual snorkelling package. OceanQuest publishes AUD 730 for one night or AUD 950 for two, per person sharing, valid to 31 March 2027. Children need the operator’s required adult supervision. Same-gender cabin sharing is not guaranteed.
Coral Sea Dreaming publishes snorkelling from AUD 669 shared or AUD 719 in a private double, per person for one night. Its small boat offers a different atmosphere, with shared bathrooms. Scubapro’s supplier snorkeller reference is AUD 840 plus AUD 100 levy and AUD 25 fuel for two nights; ask about the current total and supervision.
Spoilsport lists a 10% non-diver reduction except minke departures; confirm the eligible fare and that the route offers suitable snorkelling. Spirit recommends Ribbon Reefs for confident snorkellers, has no dedicated snorkel guide and does not recommend its remote Coral Sea reefs for them; the discount amount needs a quote. Odyssey’s snorkelling programme and True North’s adventure activities require the actual itinerary and companion fare to be confirmed.
Solo travellers should compare a shared berth with the complete sole-use supplement. Neither the word “twin” nor an empty-looking departure calendar guarantees a same-gender room-mate or a free single cabin.
Kangaroo Explorer and older offers
Kangaroo Explorer is retained as a historical profile following reports of its conversion to the Boatel. It is not ranked as a current bookable diving option. Old dollar prices and surviving retailer pages do not establish a departure.
Australia liveaboard comparison FAQ
Which is better for two nights: Scubapro or OceanQuest?
Scubapro is a continuous three-day voyage with shared bathrooms and up to 11 dives. OceanQuest has en-suite cabins and an offshore transfer, with flexible stay lengths. Compare the complete fare and desired guiding.
Are Scubapro I, II and III different comfort levels?
They share the same general programme and similar layout. Choose the operator and itinerary, then confirm which vessel and cabin you will actually use.
Which boats have private bathrooms?
OceanQuest, Spirit of Freedom and True North have en-suite cabins. Spoilsport has en suites except its Budget cabins. Scubapro, Coral Sea Dreaming and Odyssey use shared bathrooms.
Does the cheapest fare include all diving costs?
Not necessarily. Match duration, cabin, dive package, mandatory charges, guiding and rental equipment. Unknown mandatory charges prevent an all-in comparison.
Can beginners book Osprey Reef?
Do not assume so. Remote Coral Sea trips have operator-specific experience and current requirements; Spirit’s four- and seven-night programmes require more experience than its three-night Ribbons trip.
Is Odyssey a Great Barrier Reef boat?
No. Its Rowley Shoals diving programme departs Broome in Western Australia. It is included here for Australia-wide planning, not in the GBR shortlist.
Is True North a dedicated daily-dive liveaboard?
It is an adventure cruise ship with diving on selected programmes. Confirm the exact route and vessel, especially when comparing True North with True North II.
Should I book an immediate onward flight?
No-fly intervals depend on your diving and operator instructions, and transfers can be delayed. Pro Dive Cairns recommends 24 hours and no earlier than midday the day after its trip. Build your flights around the actual final dive and a sensible margin.
Do minke departures cost the same as normal trips?
Not necessarily. They are seasonal programmes, usually centred on June–July, with their own fares and companion policies. Whale encounters are never guaranteed.
How do I compare cancellation protection?
Read both operator and agent terms before paying, including date changes, weather substitutions and refund deadlines. Insurance must cover the risks and activities relevant to your booking.
