A budget liveaboard is a chance to spend more time out on the reef without turning the whole holiday into a long expedition. Focus on short Cairns departures, then compare the complete price for your cabin and diving package.

The Scubapro I, Scubapro II and Scubapro III are sister vessels of the Pro Dive Cairns fleet. Each boat has the same or a very similar layout: 32 guests, 16 air-conditioned cabins and eight shared bathrooms. The communal areas include a large sundeck to relax and mingle with fellow divers. OceanQuest prices are valid to 31 March 2027. The Scubapro supplier tariff covers 1 April 2026–31 March 2027; the operator describes taxes as included in its total fare, so avoid double counting. Coral Sea Dreaming’s reference needs confirmation for your departure. A one-night guided package is not directly comparable with two nights of independent buddy diving.

Where to save — and where paying more helps
A shared berth and a short route can keep the total manageable. OceanQuest gives you an en-suite cabin and flexible stay lengths; Scubapro offers a continuous three-day voyage with up to 11 dives; Coral Sea Dreaming trades a larger boat for a small-group overnight experience. Decide which of those differences you will actually enjoy.
If you need guidance underwater, price it before deciding. Five OceanQuest guided dives at AUD 20 each add AUD 100. Pro Dive’s 11-dive Nitrox package adds AUD 140 for qualified divers. A course, sole-use cabin or private guide is a separate purchase. Do not save on a package that leaves you uncomfortable with the diving.
Compare the invoice, not just the cabin fare: reef charges, fuel recovery, equipment, Nitrox and guiding can change the result. Add flights, checked baggage, airport transfers, a hotel before departure, insurance and any single supplement. A missing mandatory charge is an unanswered cost, not a zero.

Choose routes independently or overlay several. Numbered regional/site references show the order; straight connections are indicative, not navigational tracks. Weather, permits and the booked departure determine actual stops.
- Cairns outer reefs · Scubapro example: Cairns Marlin Marina → Flynn Reef → Milln Reef → Thetford Reef → Cairns Marlin Marina.
- Southern reefs — lighter winds: Cairns Marlin Marina → Flynn Reef → Milln Reef → Thetford Reef → Cairns Marlin Marina.
- Northern reefs — stronger winds: Cairns Marlin Marina → Hastings Reef → Breaking Patches → Michaelmas Cay → Cairns Marlin Marina.

Bringing a non-diving companion
OceanQuest and Coral Sea Dreaming offer dedicated snorkelling packages. OceanQuest’s reference is AUD 730 for one night or AUD 950 for two nights, per person sharing, valid to 31 March 2027. Coral Sea Dreaming starts at AUD 669 shared or AUD 719 in a private double for one night. The Scubapro supplier lists AUD 840 plus AUD 100 levy and AUD 25 fuel for two nights; confirm the payable total and supervision.
These are reef stays: snorkelling, meals and time aboard are the main attractions. Do not expect daily island excursions. Check age rules, swimming confidence, in-water supervision and cabin sharing before booking.
Plan the rest of the holiday
Stay in Cairns before an early check-in, confirm which city transfers are included and leave room after the last dive before flying or going to altitude. Kangaroo Explorer appeared in older budget lists, but current diving departures have not been confirmed following reports of its conversion. Its historical review is not a current booking recommendation.

Which is the cheapest Australian liveaboard?
There is no useful single answer without matching dates, nights, cabin and diving package. This page compares short Cairns products and shows the extras that can change their total.
Is Scubapro cheaper than OceanQuest?
For the two-night references here, OceanQuest is AUD 1,160 and the itemised Scubapro supplier total is AUD 1,220. The number of dives, transfer arrangement, guiding and bathrooms differ, so compare your actual quote.
Are bathrooms private?
OceanQuest cabins are en suite. Scubapro and Coral Sea Dreaming use shared bathrooms. Ask about bed layout as well as the cabin name.
Can a beginner take the cheapest certified package?
Only if certified and accepted for that product. Introductory diving and courses have different prices and prerequisites; choose the correct booking category.
Is equipment included?
OceanQuest and Pro Dive’s listed short certified packages include equipment. Confirm the exact Coral Sea Dreaming package and any specialist sizes or items you need.
Can I save by travelling alone?
A shared berth can avoid sole-use costs, but sharing and room-mate policies vary. Get the single supplement before paying.
Are meals included?
These short liveaboard products include onboard meals. Drinks, some snacks and special dietary arrangements can differ; confirm your requirements in advance.
