Spirit of Freedom: from the Ribbon Reefs to the Coral Sea
The 37-metre Spirit of Freedom offers scuba diving cruises to the Great Barrier Reef, the Coral Sea and the northern reefs. Its current programme includes three-, four- and seven-night trips as well as longer-range special expeditions.
The key decision is the route. The three-night Ribbon Reefs trip is the gentler starting point for suitably experienced Open Water divers and confident snorkellers. The Coral Sea and exploratory departures demand more experience, with longer exposed passages and a stronger emphasis on independent buddy diving.
Spirit of Freedom cabins and boat layout
Eleven air-conditioned cabins have private bathrooms. The currently published vessel specification lists up to 24 guests, a 7.1-metre beam, a 1992 build and a 2023 renovation. Some special expeditions cap the group below the normal capacity.

The cabins are mostly below deck, while the Ocean View options are higher. Travelling solo? A shared berth keeps the price closer to the published per-person fare, while having a cabin to yourself involves a separate sole-use quote.
Food and time between dives
Guests can hang out in the lounge or relax on the top deck after a day in the water. The dining saloon brings everyone together for meals. Australian and international cooking, breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks make the day feel pleasantly organised — you will not need to pack a suitcase of emergency biscuits.
Dinner is a set menu, with a beer, wine or soft drink included. Dietary requirements need at least 30 days’ notice through the booking process; complex allergies are best discussed directly with the operator before committing.
What level of diving experience do you need?

Spirit of Freedom does not provide a full guided service. Buddy teams plan and conduct their dives within the briefings and safety procedures. Crew divers and surface lookouts provide support, but a safety diver in the water is not your own guide on every dive. If you want continuous guidance, resolve that before booking.
The minimum passenger age is 16; under-18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, including in the water. Guests over 65 need a current dive medical under the operator’s policy. Medical conditions or prescription medication may also require clearance. Complete the passenger information process early.
Mask, snorkel, fins, boots, cylinders and weights are listed among the supplied items. The current fully inclusive equipment rental option starts at AUD 155 for three nights, AUD 205 for four and AUD 355 for seven. Nitrox is an extra; get a departure-specific quote. Insurance should cover the actual diving and remote evacuation, not merely lost luggage.
Routes and transfer differences
The three-night trip sails north from Cairns and ends at Lizard Island, with a flight back. The four-night trip starts with the flight to Lizard Island, then sails through the Coral Sea and back to Cairns. Seven nights combine the two sea programmes. The aircraft baggage allowance is 20 kg total per person, including carry-on luggage.

Only principal verified references are plotted. Far North days explore reefs between Tijou and Horn Island without a guaranteed named daily stop. Southern Adventure also lists Pellowe, Moss, Barnett, Bandjin, Bowl, Dip and Faraday reefs. The Yongala outline leaves its other reef stops flexible. Minke programmes modify the three-, four- and seven-night routes; the displayed layer highlights the Ribbon Reef encounter corridor. Flights are separate transfers. Weather can replace Osprey with other safe reefs.

- Steve’s Bommie: Ribbon Reef pinnacle, known for concentrated fish life and smaller reef creatures.
- Lighthouse Bommie: Ribbon Reef pinnacle; seasonal minke encounters are never guaranteed.
- Cod Hole: Northern Ribbon Reef site associated with potato cod. Follow the dive briefing and wildlife rules.
- Osprey Reef / North Horn: North Horn reference at the northern tip of Osprey Reef. Offshore access depends on weather.
- Tijou Reef: Reef reference from a published survey, not the exact dive entry point.
- Myrmidon Reef: Outer shelf reef reference; strong ocean conditions require suitable experience.
- Flinders Reef, Coral Sea: Offshore reef reference, distinct from Flinders Reef near Brisbane.
- Holmes Reef: Reef reference from published survey coordinates; actual dives depend on conditions.

These published starting fares vary with the departure and cabin. The full cruise budget also includes the applicable fuel surcharge, rental equipment, Nitrox and any other extras listed in your quote. The operator’s terms describe a variable fuel recovery charge for affected bookings from March 2026; do not assume a partner’s displayed daily figure will remain fixed.

Travelling with a non-diver?
The operator recommends the Ribbon Reefs trip for confident snorkellers and publishes a non-diver discount, but the amount must be quoted for the chosen date and cabin. No snorkel guide is provided. Snorkelling depends on weather, current and the crew’s approval. The remote Coral Sea reefs are not recommended for snorkellers. Minke departures can be a different option, subject to the specific programme and acceptance.
A companion can use the decks, books and games between water sessions. Do not assume daily beach visits or a separate activity programme while others dive. The same minimum age and guardian conditions apply.

The accounts below highlight the crew’s explanations, the meals and the variety of reef diving. They also bring the offshore itinerary into perspective: good service cannot guarantee a passage to Osprey Reef, and the independent buddy-diving style needs to suit you.

Sandra R’s LiveAboard.com review of 28 September 2026 valued the crew’s explanations and dives such as Steve’s Bommie. For someone interested in understanding the reef as well as seeing it, that educational side was part of the attraction.
Irene A, writing on 27 July 2026, highlighted the atmosphere, meals and variety of sites. Her account puts the time aboard alongside the diving as part of what made the trip enjoyable.
What could be better
Bernard S, on 19 August 2026, enjoyed the minke encounters and crew but was disappointed that weather prevented the visit to Osprey Reef. He also described mostly unguided diving. Those are useful points when choosing this boat: offshore access is conditional, and a safety diver in the water is not the same as a personal guide leading every dive.
When another boat might suit you better
If you prefer a guide beside you throughout each dive, a fully guided programme may be a more comfortable fit than Spirit of Freedom’s independent buddy diving. A confident snorkeller is better matched to the Ribbon Reefs than the remote Coral Sea programme. The three-, four- and seven-night options also involve different flight and sea transfers, so the route matters as much as the cabin.

Is Spirit of Freedom operating again?
Yes. Spirit of Freedom operates current reef and Coral Sea programmes, alongside selected special expeditions.
Are all cabins en suite?
Yes, including the Quad cabin. Quad occupants share that cabin’s own bathroom.
Can I book a Standard cabin with two low beds?
A two-single configuration is described, but most Standard cabins use a double with an upper bunk. Ask for the exact room and confirmation.
Will a guide lead every dive?
No full guided dive service is promised. You and your buddy are responsible for planning and conducting your dives within the crew’s procedures.
Should a snorkeller choose the four-night Coral Sea trip?
The operator recommends the Ribbon Reefs instead and does not recommend the remote Coral Sea reefs for snorkelling. There is no dedicated snorkel guide.
How much luggage can I take on the Lizard Island flight?
The operator publishes 20 kg per person including carry-on luggage for three- and four-night fly/dive trips. Confirm any special equipment arrangements.
Are all special expeditions suitable with 20 dives?
No. Far North and Far East programmes state a 100-dive minimum with relevant current and remote-reef experience. Obtain approval for the actual itinerary.
Does the fare include every piece of equipment?
No. Some basic items are supplied, but the full rental package and Nitrox cost extra. Check the itemised booking.
Can I arrange a same-day onward flight?
Use the exact final-dive time and operator no-fly instructions. Lizard Island transfers have specific operating arrangements; an ordinary commercial connection is a separate decision. Leave a practical margin for weather and delays.
What happens if weather changes the route?
Dive sites and counts are not guaranteed. Read the current cancellation and force-majeure terms before paying, and check the matching insurance cover.
