Your cabin should feel like part of the holiday

The Great Barrier Reef is world-renowned as an incredible diving destination. For a more comfortable liveaboard holiday, start with the cabin you will actually sleep in: a proper double or low twin beds, your own bathroom and enough space to enjoy the time between dives. Spoilsport and Spirit of Freedom are the main longer-trip choices here; OceanQuest is worth considering for a short en-suite reef stay.

Customers on Spirit of Freedom can choose between 11 well-appointed cabins. Every cabin has air-conditioning as well as an en-suite bathroom. The current layout accommodates 24 guests; older descriptions of two quad cabins or 26 guests should not guide your booking.

After the dives, guests can take it easy on the top deck, relax on the loungers or have a chat in the salon. For photographers, camera facilities and rinse arrangements matter too. Confirm dietary needs, cabin access and charging requirements with the operator, especially if stairs or upper bunks are a concern.

What does a cabin upgrade cost?

Spoilsport’s three-night Fly Dive Cod Hole published 2026/27 cruise fare is AUD 2,504 Budget versus AUD 3,574 Premium per person sharing: AUD 1,070 more for the Premium category. Fuel recovery is currently AUD 20 per person per night; reef charges need confirmation. The Premium fare plus three nights of fuel is AUD 3,634 before the reef charge, not an all-in total.

Spirit of Freedom advertises three-night fares from AUD 2,500 Quad and AUD 2,900 Standard; obtain a dated Ocean View or Stateroom quote rather than assuming the cheapest headline buys an upper-category cabin. Fuel recovery, equipment hire and Nitrox can be extra. For shorter stays, OceanQuest’s two-night certified package is AUD 1,160 per person sharing to 31 March 2027, with equipment and compulsory reef charges included.

Compare the invoice, not just the cabin fare: reef charges, fuel recovery, equipment, Nitrox and guiding can change the result. Add flights, checked baggage, airport transfers, a hotel before departure, insurance and any single supplement. A missing mandatory charge is an unanswered cost, not a zero.

Comfort does not change the route conditions

Ribbon Reefs, Osprey Reef and Far Northern expeditions are not interchangeable. Longer passages, currents and remote recovery remain part of the trip whatever cabin you choose. Both Spoilsport and Spirit run seasonal minke programmes; the old claim that Spoilsport alone has a permit is not a sound way to choose.

  • Milln Reef: Reef reference; Swimming Pools and Whale Bommie are among the operator’s named sites.

A short outer-reef trip and a remote Coral Sea expedition ask different things of you. OceanQuest and Coral Sea Dreaming sell separate certified-diver, introductory and snorkelling products. Scubapro also offers training programmes that must be booked as courses; an uncertified guest cannot simply join the certified-diver schedule.

Spirit of Freedom specifies Open Water plus 10 ocean dives, including five in the past year, for its three-night trip; four- and seven-night programmes require Advanced plus 20 ocean dives, including five in the past year. Its Far North/Far East expeditions require Advanced and 100 logged dives. Spoilsport’s requirements depend on the expedition. Ask for approval of your actual experience before paying, especially after a long break.

Guiding is another real difference. OceanQuest’s standard certified package allows buddy diving, with guiding extra. Coral Sea Dreaming’s certified package is guided. Spirit operates independent buddy diving. Discuss currents, depth, entry and recovery arrangements, rental sizing and required signalling equipment with the boat.

Will a non-diver enjoy the trip?

OceanQuest offers a dedicated snorkelling product for a short mixed-interest holiday: two nights are listed at AUD 950 per person sharing to 31 March 2027. Spoilsport lists a 10% non-diver reduction except minke departures; confirm the eligible cabin fare. Spirit’s non-diver reduction needs a quote, and there is no dedicated snorkel guide. Its Ribbon Reefs programme is more suitable for confident snorkellers than its remote Coral Sea programme.

Discuss what happens while divers are in the water. Lounge space and good meals are welcome, but do not assume spa treatments, island visits or guided snorkelling are included. If your companion wants daily shore activities, a land-based stay with day diving may suit both of you better.

Looking beyond the Great Barrier Reef?

True North offers a different kind of luxury adventure on selected Western Australia routes. It is not a Great Barrier Reef boat, and True North II is a separate vessel. Odyssey is also based on the west coast for its Rowley Shoals diving programme and has shared bathrooms. Use the Australia-wide guide before comparing either with a Cairns trip.

Comfort and luxury FAQ

Which cabin suits two friends who want low beds?

Spoilsport Standard has two low singles. On Spirit, ask for the exact Standard arrangement; category names alone do not guarantee your preferred bed configuration.

Does every Spoilsport cabin have an en suite?

No. Premium, Standard and Club do; Budget cabins use shared bathrooms.

Is the most expensive boat the most comfortable for me?

Not necessarily. A private bathroom, cabin position, stairs, bed type and trip length can matter more than the headline price.

Will a catamaran prevent seasickness?

No vessel can promise that. Sea conditions and your susceptibility matter; discuss prevention with a qualified clinician and choose a route you are comfortable with.

Is all diving guided on these boats?

No. Spirit uses independent buddy diving and OceanQuest charges for optional guiding. Check Spoilsport’s arrangements for your expedition and needs.

Can a non-diver get a discount?

Sometimes. Spoilsport advertises 10% except minke departures; Spirit requires a quote. OceanQuest sells a separate snorkelling package. Do not subtract diving costs yourself.

Is True North on the Great Barrier Reef?

It is not in this GBR shortlist. Its Australian adventure programmes require a separate west-coast itinerary and vessel check.

Can I choose a luxury cabin and a beginner route?

Yes, comfort and experience are separate criteria. A shorter en-suite OceanQuest stay may fit better than a demanding remote expedition; acceptance still depends on the product and screening.
