The Tulamben Liberty ship wreck is a must do for any divers going to Bali. The wreck is humongous (120 m) and is a fantastic playground to explore.
If you are a beginner diver it is a unique opportunity to scuba dive a world class wreck dive site. If you are an experienced diver try to go further to the deeper part of the wreck around 35 m deep and look at the wonderful bow gun covered with Coral. It is a great photo opportunity! Moreover for macro lovers you can also find the rare pygmy seahorse in the area.

All over the wreck you will spot schooling fishes, trevallies and barracudas looking for their next meal and Blacktip Reef Sharks patrolling the area. On the sandy part, watch the garden Eels dance and try to spot the giant Sweetlips often there.

Best Dive Review
The Liberty Wreck is not the only amazing dive site around the Tulamben area. Diving the Tulamben Wall also called Drop Off is also a great experience and makes a perfect second dive.
A few kilometres North, you will find the Kubu village. There is a wonderful reef with a nice coral garden. There are two very easy dive sites perfect for beginners. Also a very good place for macro underwater photography with pygmy seahorse and nudibranch. A good place to see blacktip and whitetip reef Sharks. Night diving this site is also very rewarding.
How to dive Tulamben?
Most people head to Tulamben for a daytrip from all over Bali (and mostly South Bali). Everything is arranged by the dive centres and you will normally make 2 or 3 dives during the day around Tulamben. One dive early morning on the USS Liberty Ship Wreck, one dive on the beautiful Tulamben wall, a yummy lunch on the beach then another great dive on the Liberty Ship seems to be a perfect programme!
The Wreck is so big that you need at least two dives to see it all.
A good tip from us: spend the night around Tulamben and enjoy a terrific night dive on the Liberty Ship wreck! Then be the first to dive the wreck in the morning (without all the daytrippers yet)! This makes it an unforgettable experience!
Where to stay?
I usually use this website to book in advance my hotels in Tulamben as they usually have the lowest rates I find. I like it because it's free to cancel and change the dates.
Best time to dive in Tulamben
Try to dive there early in the morning or late in the afternoon as the wreck can be seriously packed with dozens of divers during ‘rush hour’, normally between 10 am and 2 pm.

Scuba Diving conditions
The water is usually very clear and most of time there is no current at all. The underwater photographers will delight in the black volcanic sand below which gives a remarkable and unusual contrast with the colourful coral and fishes.
Snorkelling in Tulamben
The wreck starts around 4 m and can also be snorkelled. However you have to be in good shape as the beach is about 40 m away and you can get tired easily. The best is to rent a small outrigger boat who will wait for you. Otherwise, it might be easier for snorkellers to go a few hundred meters south near the Drop Off dive site or in Amed.
Diving Safety
If you are planning an upcoming dive trip or travelling to Tulamben, it is a really good idea to invest in travel insurance for scuba diving, because you never know what could happen and when you might need it (because accidents do happen!). I recommend this diving insurance as they offer worldwide coverage and focus on providing scuba divers a quality insurance and medical assistance service.

Don’t miss the Liberty Wreck, it is an awsome spot to dive in Bali!
Tulamben is actually a great spot for beginners! Easy to access too.
It is actually possible to dive in Tulamben on a day trip from Padang Bai or even Sanur and Kuta.
Just went there 2 weeks ago, perhaps in the running of being my top favorite place to dive(been diving around Asia for 9 years)
Bali also makes it great to visit, an amazing island, people are welcoming.
I fully recommend using Blue Season in Sanur, genuinely great service and they throw good parties!
Fantastic dive!!
Be sure to wear neopren swimsocks, because the walk into the water is full of sharp big rocky stones.
The wreck itself is usually pretty crowded, so the best dive will be early in the morning.
Lots of things to see, so bring your underwatercamera if you can (have).
I really recomend staying in the Tradisi Beach Villas in Amed. The familiy who runs the place are so friendly and caring, and the trip to Tulamben is just 20 minutes away!
That’s a great point Vibbe. Swimsocks or even dive boots with thick rubber soles are necessary here. Big pebbles and rocks + no boots = Pain
All dive centers that bring divers here will have open heeled fins with booties for rent!
Great dive! Been there yesterday!
saw a lot of different kinds of fish and even a sea turtle!!
going to bali u should definitely dive there!
Amazing dive spot for any level of divers. Bring your pocket camera, GoPro, housed DSLR or anything else AND the red filter. We call it the best spot.
Love the picture!
Do you have more like this from Bali?
Pics of Bali underwater? Yes we do
I was at Tulamben for a week in January 2014. It was a great place to go diving. The sea life was abundant! If want to read another dive enthusiast time at Tulamben check out: http://globaldetour.co/2014/04/05/a-scuba-divers-playground/
But Divezone has reported this place really well and anyone after some adventure underwater, this place is definitely for you!
I got my ow at tulamben wreck divers. I stayed in Tulamben for 6days. After getting my certificate, I dived with Bali quest, which was next door.
Tulamben is a quiet village, just dive dive dive.
I went to Tirta Gangga, A used-to-be garden n swimming pool for a Balinese King.
My dives always started at 6am, not so many divers in the wreck.. couldn’t get enough of it..
Recently went diving on Liberty Wreck in Tulamben while staying in Tejakula. Will definitely go back again next year as the visibility was great with a terrific amount of sealife. Also really enjoyed the diving and snorkelling right outside The Villas Tejakula where I stayed in Angel Canyon and Tangga Reef. No-one seems to mention this place but it is awesome. Bali is one of the best places to visit.
Perfect dive site. What a huge wreck below so calm seasurface. About a height of building with 5 stories. Visibility > 20m in AM. No currents and so much to see, so you can dive very comfortably. Turtles and big fish > 1m there. Although there’re many divers there and has reputation for crowdedness, don’t worry because the wreck is so big, people are scattered so you can feel it even less crowded than Crystal bay in Nusa Penida. One of definitely best dive site in Bali. Tulamben town is also quiet and very clean. However it takes 6hr by return from south side of Bali. So consider lodging in north or east side of Bali.

we are planning a dive in late december. is it good time to dive
I had my short holidays in tulamben bali. I tried diving in Dive concept Tulamben. So amazing and most unforgettable experience in my whole life. Dive concept team were so accommodating and will treat you as family. Especially Nico, the dive master he was so amazing. It was my first time to try diving… but with his assistance it seems everything turns to be magical and not so scary. He will guide and teach you very well accordingly. I will surely recommend dive concept and especially Nico. Amazing team!… I will surely come back and recommend this to my friends. Fabulous holiday in Bali!…
been to tulamben twice. the wall and the shipwreck was great .good for begginer. nice and easy. shore dive. water very calm. quite crowded.
I dive in Jun2018, during a pleasure trip after work, the dive experience started early 06:00H and the personnel of Aqua paradise was ther to support us in the dive, the visibility was 12 meters, a lot of life, small and big fishes, the water temperature was excellent during two dives 1.USS liberty wreck 2. Coral Garden. this experience is recommended to every one that enjoy dive, during the activity you normally share with experience divers and also have option for new divers, excellent time spend on this adventure.
USS Liberty: 15 meter visibility, Depth 20 meters. Hugh Wreck Nice experience , small and to see big fish require early dive (06:00)
Coral Garden: 15 meter visibility, Shallow dive, A lot of indian scultures, a lot of clown fish and smallfish in some case you can see Hugh package of fish.
Fabulous surroundings from the wreck. Swimming thru the hull & walkway doors was really eerie. The marine life is just interactive.
