I usually use this website to book in advance my hotels in Cocos Island Costa Rica as they usually have the lowest rates I find. I like it because it's free to cancel and change the dates.

There are no tourist hotels on Cocos Island. You sleep aboard your liveaboard. Hotel bookings for this trip are on mainland Costa Rica, usually near San José before departure and after your return; check that any hotel search result is actually in the correct location.

Activities and excursions in Cocos Island Costa Rica

When permitted, boats may arrange guided island walks to enjoy rainforest, birds and waterfalls. Landings and access to trails are conditional, so do not treat a particular hike or waterfall swim as guaranteed. Follow ranger instructions and wildlife-protection rules.

Non-diving companions should discuss activities with the operator: much of the trip is spent aboard or supporting dives, and snorkelling opportunities depend on conditions. Confirm suitable activities before reserving a berth.

Best time to visit Cocos Island Costa Rica

Cocos can be visited on scheduled expeditions throughout the year. Broadly, December–May tends to offer drier weather and a better chance of calmer crossings, while June–November is wetter and may bring rougher seas. Pelagic encounters attract divers in the wetter months, but conditions and sightings vary.

Health and Safety

Cocos is remote from mainland medical care. Confirm the vessel’s emergency procedures and carry dive accident insurance that covers your planned diving and remote evacuation. Aggressor and Undersea Hunter require dive insurance; check the current policy requirements directly with your operator.

A boat’s separate evacuation plan or fee is not automatically a substitute for comprehensive dive insurance. Check exclusions, coverage limits, emergency contacts and cancellation or interruption cover before paying.

Discuss seasickness prevention with a qualified health professional before the long crossing, and bring sufficient personal medication. Review the operator’s medical questionnaire early. Schedule flights and any high-altitude travel around the required interval after diving, following your training, dive computer and operator guidance.

Packing checklist

• Passport, travel confirmations, certification cards and offline copies of insurance and emergency contacts.
• Personal dive gear, computer, exposure suit and surface-signalling equipment specified by the boat; reserve rentals in advance.
• Rain jacket, sun protection, secure footwear for permitted walks and a dry bag.
• Chargers, suitable plug adapters, spare camera batteries and essential equipment spares; check airline baggage and battery rules.

Where is Cocos Island Costa Rica located in the world?

Cocos Island is in the Pacific Ocean, Costa Rica; it should not be confused with Australia’s Cocos (Keeling) Islands. There is no scheduled passenger flight to Isla del Coco. A liveaboard expedition combines the journey, meals, accommodation and diving, subject to each operator’s inclusions.

How to get to Cocos Island Costa Rica?

1. Fly to San José (SJO): Juan Santamaría International Airport is the usual arrival airport for the operators featured here. Arrive at least one night before the charter starts.
2. Stay at the agreed meeting hotel: confirm the exact hotel and pickup time before booking your room. Airport transfers and hotel nights may be separate from the boat fare.
3. Transfer to the embarkation port: Puntarenas is used by Aggressor and Undersea Hunter. The road transfer from San José is around 2–3 hours; traffic and pickup arrangements affect timing. Confirm the port for your specific voyage.
4. Cross to Cocos: allow roughly 32–36 hours each way, depending on vessel and sea conditions. Crossing days are part of the itinerary, not full diving days.
5. Allow time after the cruise: a mainland night after disembarkation is a useful buffer against delays. Confirm the earliest recommended return flight with the operator before buying tickets.

Do I need a visa for Cocos Island Costa Rica?

Entry rules depend on nationality and travel history. Check the Costa Rica Tourism Board’s entry requirements for passport validity, visas, proof of onward or return travel and any financial evidence. The immigration officer determines the permitted stay. Check transit-country requirements as well.

Health requirements can depend on your origin, recent travel and connections; use the official guidance rather than assuming one vaccination rule applies to everyone. Your boat may have additional document requirements.

National park access is separate from entry to Costa Rica. Ask the operator to confirm permits, required passenger details and submission deadlines. Complete its guest forms early and bring certification cards, nitrox certification if applicable and insurance documents.

Getting Around

Transportation from San José to the liveaboard is generally arranged by the operator. Pickup times can vary with the tide-dependent departure schedule. Confirm whether transfers are included and which hotels are served.

At Cocos, tenders take guests between the vessel, dive sites and any authorised landings. Land excursions depend on park permission, sea conditions and the crew’s programme; independent sightseeing and day trips from the mainland are not a practical plan.

• Cabin beds, shared-berth or single-supplement policy, bathroom and air conditioning.
• Dietary needs, rental sizes, tank valves and nitrox arrangements before departure.
• Accepted onboard payment methods, taxes and card surcharges.
• Charging sockets and voltage, camera facilities and internet packages. Download documents beforehand and do not rely on continuous offshore connectivity.
