Elphinstone: an offshore wall dive near Marsa Alam

Elphinstone is a long, narrow offshore reef in Egypt’s southern Red Sea, famous for drift dives along steep coral-covered walls. North and south plateaus extend from the reef before the seabed falls away into much deeper water. It can be visited on a day excursion from the Marsa Alam region or as part of a liveaboard itinerary.

This is a site for experienced divers. Its proximity to the coast does not make it a sheltered house reef: current, exposed surface conditions and the boat pickup are central parts of the dive.

What the reef looks like

The two long walls provide a different experience from the plateaus at either end. Soft corals, gorgonian fans and schools of small reef fish give the walls much of their colour. Larger fish may pass in the blue, but the reef is worth attention even without a shark encounter.

Descriptions give the reef’s length at roughly 300–375 metres. More important for a visitor is the vertical scale: the walls extend beyond 100 metres, far below a normal recreational dive. The northern and southern plateaus also continue beyond 40 metres in places. None of these depths is a target or permission to descend there.

The guide should identify the planned section, maximum depth, current direction and exit before the dive. Do not adopt a fixed north-to-south route from an online description: the conditions and boat operation determine the appropriate plan. A deeper feature beneath the reef is not a casual extension of a wall dive.

Sharks, fish and season

Oceanic whitetips, also called longimanus, are the reef’s best-known attraction. Hammerheads and other pelagics may also be encountered. Barracuda, tuna, jacks and the dense reef-fish life add variety; the appearance of any particular animal is never guaranteed.

PADI’s shark-diving guide highlights October–December for oceanic whitetips. Individual site listings use somewhat different seasonal windows, so treat this as broad trip-planning guidance, not a prediction for your dive. The earlier precise manta-season claim is not retained because the sources consulted do not agree.

Choose a trip you would enjoy for the wall and coral as well as the possible wildlife. Follow the operator’s shark briefing, keep the group together and avoid chasing, touching or feeding animals. A sighting should never pull you beyond the depth or route agreed for the dive.

Experience requirements and conditions

Strong current is possible and there is deep open water beneath the dive. Comfortable buoyancy, recent experience in drifts and familiarity with the planned ascent and pickup matter. Share your certification and recent logbook with the operator before booking, and ask about its minimum logged dives and required equipment.

Requirements belong to the specific programme. For example, Emperor’s broader Simply the Best liveaboard itinerary requires Advanced Open Water or equivalent and 50 logged dives. That does not establish the admission rule for every local Elphinstone day boat. The guide’s assessment and the day’s conditions still determine whether an individual dive is appropriate.

Day trip or liveaboard?

A land-based stay can work well if Elphinstone is one excursion among coastal dives. Emperor lists day-boat access from the Wadi Sabarah area via Hermes Jetty and speedboat options subject to guest numbers. Red Sea Diving Safari also lists Elphinstone as an outer-range speedboat excursion. Confirm your actual departure point, transfers and the time at sea rather than relying on one crossing time for the whole Marsa Alam coast.

As a price reference, Emperor’s Port Ghalib page listed a €57 supplement for a full-day Elphinstone trip with three dives, checked on 24 October 2026. This is an add-on to the diving price, not a complete €57 excursion; the listing says the third dive is included. Obtain the full total for your package, rental equipment, transfers and any other charges before comparing offers.

A liveaboard can combine Elphinstone with the Brothers, Daedalus or southern reefs. Check the named route and departure port. A listed stop remains weather-dependent, and your holiday should allow for an alternative if the captain cannot visit it.

For non-divers

Do not assume a place on an Elphinstone dive boat includes snorkelling. The exposed reef and current make it a different proposition from a sheltered coastal bay. Ask the operator explicitly about passenger acceptance, permitted water activities, supervision and the complete fare. No Elphinstone-specific non-diver package was verified here.

CDWS lists the reef at 25°18′22″ N, 34°51′41″ E, approximately 25.306111° N, 34.861389° E. The marker is a planning reference, not an entry point, mooring or navigation instruction.
