HMAS Brisbane Scuttling

The Ex HMAS Adelaide is the most recent Wreck dive in Australia! It was sunk in April 2011 near Terrigal not far from Sydney to create an artificial reef and a wreck diving site. You can even watch the Video of the Sinking.

The HMAS Adelaide was a 138 meter long Escorte Frigate of the Australian Navy. Everything has been made to make the wreck the most interesting to dive with most of the original items of the ship left in place. Holes have also been created to allow easy access to divers and making penetration of the wreck safe.

The HMAS Adelaide lies in 32 meters of water on a sandy bottom. Most of the interesting parts of the wreck are above 20 meters and it is actually a great dive site for all level of divers. It is also a great place for underwater photography! Watch this video to get an idea of what its like to dive this new Shipwreck!

Marine Life

Currently there is no marine life on the Wreck as it has been sunk very recently (April 2011) but other wrecks in Australia like the HMAS Swan or the HMAS Brisbane which were already sunk in the last few years show that a various marine life will soon be attracted by the Adelaide!

Access

The ex HMAS Adelaide is located near Terrigal, on the Central Coast. It takes about 1h30 min to drive there from Sydney.

Once you are in Terrigal, the wreck is about 1.4 km offshore and can be reached very easily by boat.

History

The HMAS Adelaide (FFG 01) was used during the first Gulf War, in East Timor for peacekeeping operations as well as other various events. It was constructed in the United States and bought by the Royal Australian Navy in 1980.

Most people are here for Wreck Diving.

You can dive HMAS Adelaide all year long. Access: from the Shore. See the map of HMAS Adelaide on the right for the exact location.
