A Red Sea week with room between dives
Royal Evolution combines a steel-hulled, 39 m dive boat with twelve cabins for up to 24 guests. Its appeal is as much the space between dives as the sites themselves: a shaded deck, indoor lounge and a dedicated place for camera gear make a busy diving week easier to settle into.
The Royal Evolution is a steel-hulled liveaboard built by divers, for divers. Built in 2006, it has four decks and an 8.6 m moulded beam. The cabin choice makes a useful first decision: a lower-deck twin keeps the fare down, while the main-deck suites put windows and a different bed layout higher on the priority list.
Royal Evolution and Red Sea RE Aggressor refer to the same vessel. The Aggressor name was used for the programme launched in January 2022. Current departures are marketed as Royal Evolution; our Red Sea RE Aggressor page concerns that naming history, not a second boat.

The main-deck twin suites have been described with adapted doors and bathroom fittings. That is a useful starting point for an accessibility conversation, but the gangway, tenders and individual mobility needs still deserve a boat-specific assessment before booking.
Life between dives
The Royal Evolution offers multiple communal areas. The air-conditioned saloon gives you somewhere indoors to read or work through the day’s photographs, while the shaded deck and loungers offer another pace altogether. There is also a hot tub. Having both indoor and outdoor places matters on a trip where much of the holiday happens aboard.
Meals are buffet-style, with local and Western dishes and snacks through the day. Vegetarian and vegan options are advertised; dietary arrangements belong in the booking conversation, particularly as a vegan supplement appears in the operator’s current terms.
Travelling with a non-diver?
Royal Evolution is listed as non-diver friendly; the companion fare and actual snorkelling opportunities need confirmation for the chosen route.
Diving from Royal Evolution
The dive deck has individual gear storage, camera-working space and rinse facilities. Charging lockers provide 110 V and 220 V outlets. Nitrox, rental equipment and technical-gas support are advertised, but technical facilities do not mean decompression dives are permitted on a normal recreational departure.
The published recreational rules require buddy diving, no decompression diving, a maximum of 40 m and a maximum dive time of 60 minutes. Your own certification or gas plan may impose a shallower limit. For offshore-island itineraries, the operator specifies advanced certification and at least 50 logged dives.
Choose the route before the cabin
The programme includes seven-night circuits and a ten-night extension. Northern wreck trips start in Hurghada; the southern programmes below use Port Ghalib. The longer southern circuits involve overnight sailing, so the route deserves particular attention if passages affect your comfort.
Lines show indicative sequences, not navigation tracks or guaranteed stops. Port markers indicate embarkation areas; reef-group markers are reference locations. Weather, permissions and the departure programme can change the route.

The Special Wrecks programme groups individual wreck visits around Abu Nuhas, Gubal and the Brothers; the regional map does not imply that every wreck is suitable for every diver. Grand Tour descriptions also vary in their final southern stops, which should be checked against the chosen sailing.

Abu Nuhas and Rosalie Moller represent the northern wreck choices; Brothers and Daedalus the offshore-island circuits; Rocky, Zabargad and St John’s the southern programmes. Elba is shown separately near the border. These are itinerary choices, not a promise that one cruise visits them all.

What to include in the budget
These are 2026 operator reference fares per person, with two sharing, before optional extras. They are not live quotes.

Main-deck cabins add €20 per person per night; private occupancy carries a 75% cruise-fare supplement. Seven-day 12 L Nitrox is €70. A vegan diet adds €100. Flights, visa, insurance, alcohol and gratuities are additional. Fuel supplements can change.
Full board, snacks, most soft drinks, a 12 L tank and weights are included. Transfer inclusions differ between booking descriptions: confirm your airport, hotel and marina in the written quote.
Getting to the right departure port
Port Ghalib is close to Marsa Alam airport; Hurghada is a substantially longer road transfer. A Hurghada-based wreck trip therefore calls for a different flight plan from a southern departure. The booking confirmation should settle boarding time, transfer arrangements and the final diving schedule before you commit to flights.
What guests loved — and what could be better
What guests loved
In a LiveAboard.com review dated 13 August 2024, Lea W praised the friendly crew and food, while recognising that dive encounters involve luck. That is useful context for a boat where the daily atmosphere matters alongside the itinerary.
Denis Samuel H, writing on 31 May 2024, highlighted southern sites with few other boats and the diving facilities. His account describes one trip rather than a guarantee of quiet reefs on every sailing.
What could be better
Christian M’s 21 November 2022 review praised the running of the vessel but described disappointment with larger-animal encounters in Sudan. This is historical feedback about expectations and wildlife, not evidence that the same Sudan itinerary is available now.
When another boat might suit you better
A first liveaboard with gentler sites, a shorter passage or fewer qualification requirements may be a better fit than an offshore-island or Elba programme. If a private cabin is essential, the occupancy supplement also deserves as much attention as the headline fare. Compare the trip you would actually book, rather than the boat’s lowest advertised price.
Royal Evolution questions worth settling
Is Royal Evolution a different boat from Red Sea RE Aggressor?
No. Red Sea RE Aggressor was the name used for the vessel’s Aggressor programme from January 2022. Current Royal Evolution bookings should be checked under the name and terms shown on the actual departure.
Which cabins have a double bed?
The two main-deck double suites have queen beds. The two main-deck twin suites and eight lower-deck cabins have separate beds.
Can a new diver join the offshore routes?
The operator requires advanced certification and at least 50 logged dives for trips including the offshore islands. Meeting those numbers is not a substitute for being comfortable with the conditions of the selected itinerary.
Does technical-gas support mean I can plan decompression dives?
No. The published recreational rules prohibit decompression dives. Any technical expedition would need its own explicit arrangements; it cannot be inferred from the equipment list.
Does every route depart Port Ghalib?
No. Special Wrecks uses Hurghada. The southern programmes described here use Port Ghalib, and the written departure confirmation takes precedence over a general boat description.
Are older Sudan trip reports evidence of current availability?
No. They describe past voyages. Border itineraries require current checks of the exact waters, permissions, travel advice and insurance, independently of the boat’s history.

Very professional service.
An unforgettable first liveaboard experience!
This was my very first liveaboard, and I honestly think it will be incredibly difficult to beat this experience!
The crew was absolutely amazing. Everyone was genuinely kind, attentive, and always ready to help with a smile. You never had to ask for something twice. Their hospitality felt natural and sincere, rather than simply part of their job. They genuinely cared about making everyone’s experience as enjoyable as possible.
The boat itself has a wonderful charm. Royal Evolution is an older vessel, but it is beautifully maintained and feels very safe and comfortable. The cleanliness was exceptional. Our cabins were cleaned multiple times a day, the beds were made daily, and even small things like emptying the bins were taken care of constantly. The common areas were equally spotless, tidy, and always smelled lovely.
Diving operations and organization were excellent, thanks especially to Ahmed. He did a fantastic job coordinating every aspect of the diving experience. He was attentive to everyone’s needs and went out of his way to arrange equipment, even for special requests. One of my friends needed a backplate for their wing, which wasn’t available on board, but Ahmed made sure to source one before we left the harbor. That level of care and problem-solving was really appreciated.
The diving equipment felt new and was in excellent condition. The entire setup was also incredibly practical and well organized. Each diver had a designated station with their cabin number, a tank that was refilled without needing to remove and reattach the BCD, and a storage box underneath for fins, masks, weights, and other equipment.
Inside, we also had our own storage space with two towels that were regularly replaced, room for personal belongings, and the possibility to charge devices. As someone who wears glasses, I especially appreciated having a safe and convenient place to keep them between dives. These thoughtful details made the whole experience so much easier.
The dive briefings were detailed, clear, and professional. Dive site maps were displayed on the TV and explained thoroughly. The guides took the time to answer questions, and we always knew what to expect before entering the water. Everything was organized smoothly, without ever feeling rushed.
The dive guides were fantastic. They were experienced, knew the dive sites extremely well, and genuinely enjoyed sharing their knowledge about marine life. What impressed me most was their curiosity. If they didn’t know the answer to a question, they would actually take the time to research it, both to help us and to expand their own knowledge. That kind of passion and humility is wonderful to see.
A special mention to Sven, whose knowledge of nudibranchs and eye for spotting marine life underwater were particularly impressive. He was excellent at finding and identifying those tiny creatures that many of us would otherwise completely miss. Having someone with that level of underwater expertise made the dives even more interesting.
A big shout-out as well to Zayed and Peter, who were both fantastic!
And a particularly special mention to Peter, who really contributed to making this trip memorable. He’s incredibly approachable, knowledgeable, kind, and genuinely lovely to be around. Whether you’re discussing serious topics, asking for diving guidance, having a laugh, or playing board games, he’s always great company. He’s one of those people whose warmth and sincerity you can really feel, and I truly appreciated getting to know him.
The food was another highlight! Everything was delicious, and the chef deserves a huge thank you for his thoughtfulness. I have difficulty with lactose, which can make longer trips challenging, but he consistently prepared lactose-free portions for me. I didn’t have to keep reminding him, and that small but incredibly meaningful attention made such a difference to my comfort and enjoyment throughout the trip.
Safety was clearly a priority. Everything ran smoothly, and I always felt that we were in very capable hands. There were consistently two Zodiacs out on the water during our dives, keeping an eye on the divers. Whenever we deployed our SMBs, a Zodiac would typically reach us in less than two minutes. Knowing that the team was always nearby made us feel incredibly comfortable and safe.
And finally, a very special thank you to the captain for one of my favourite memories of the trip. On our last day, after our final dive, we spotted dolphins. Instead of simply pointing them out from the boat, he spontaneously took us out on the Zodiac so we could swim with them. He even took us back for a second encounter! He absolutely didn’t have to do that, which made the gesture even more special. It was such a wholesome, beautiful moment to share with my friends, and one I’ll remember for a very long time.
Overall, Royal Evolution exceeded my expectations in every way. Beyond the diving, the charming boat, the excellent organization, and the delicious food, it’s really the people and their genuine kindness that made this experience so special.
For my first liveaboard, I couldn’t have asked for anything better. You’ve definitely set the bar very high for all my future trips!
