Amed Travel Tips

Amed is a small traditional fishing village on the Northeast coast of Bali surrounded by the very scenic Mount Agung. Compared to much of Bali, you won’t find too many tourists here and it is the perfect place to discover the real unspoiled Bali. You will feel as though you were visiting the island 20 years back (before the tourist boom!).

Try to wander early in the morning on the long black sandy beaches to check out the fishermen using their jukung, the local fishing boat – some might even take you out with them.

By night, you can enjoy a seafood dinner at one of the restaurants lining the shore (barracuda is almost always on the menu amongst other seafood) while enjoying a cold Bintang as you watch the sun set.

And if your body’s feeling tired after a day of diving or snorkelling, head to the beach for a massage from one of the many Balinese ladies offering them to visitors to Amed (you can’t miss them). Some have described Amed as one of their favourite spots in Bali and keep coming back, and after visiting, you will soon discover why.

Where to stay?

I usually use this website to book in advance my hotels in Amed as they usually have the lowest rates I find. I like it because it's free to cancel and change the dates.

Amed has a limited (but growing!) choice of beachside accommodation to suit all tastes. There are several guesthouses right in Amed village mostly offering a very good quality/price ratio. Also, many people base themselves in one of the guesthouses or bungalows along the beach in the village of Jemeluk to take advantage of the offshore snorkelling and restaurants.

Activities and excursions in Amed

As an idea, you could also rent a motorbike for the day and stop off at the tiny bays along the coast and explore each of them in your own time. It is possible to go Snorkelling right from the beach in front of your hotel or in Jemeluk. Visit our diving section for more information.

Health and Safety

If you are planning an upcoming dive trip or travelling to Amed, it is a really good idea to invest in travel insurance for scuba diving, because you never know what could happen and when you might need it (because accidents do happen!). Where is Amed located in the world?

Amed is situated on the North East coast of Bali in the Jemeluk Bay, a few kilometres South of Tulamben and North of Padang Bai and Candidasa.

Jemeluk is a very small sleepy fishing village right near Amed and is where most people stay when exploring the area, with a choice of homestays or bungalows, most of them beachside.

How to get to Amed?

From the South of Bali and the Ngurah Rai International Airport of Denpasar, it is quite a long road trip. Let’s say around 4 hours depending on the traffic and the weather conditions. Amed is very close to Tulamben and easily accessible for a daytrip. Moreover it is just a short one hour drive from Candidasa.
