MV Avalon I dive boat review
MV Avalon I is one of the most luxurious and comfortable of the Avalon Liveaboards vessels. Along with her sister vessel, Avalon II, she represents one of the most pleasant ways to explore the Cuban waters.
The marine park of Jardines de la Reina or “Gardens of the Queen” is only open to a limited number of divers. A maximum of 900 divers per year are granted access and, as a consequence, Jardines de la Reina is said by some scientists to be one of the best preserved marine eco-systems with the largest fish populations in the Caribbean of Sharks, Snappers and Groupers.

Built by Sea Craft Dynamic Shipbuilders, MV Avalon 1 is a generous 36m in length. She is able to cruise at 12 knots with her Detroit Diesel motors and has accommodation and facilities for 18 divers plus crew. This makes her slightly smaller that Avalon II – the largest vessel in the fleet – but larger than sister vessel the MV Georgiana.
Cabins and Boat Layout
Avalon I has 8 ‘State Rooms’ for her 18 guests. 2 staterooms are aft of the main saloon. 2 further staterooms are are on the middle deck. And a further four staterooms on the lower deck. As you would expect, each stateroom has it’s own private ensuite bathroom facility, air-conditioning, television and phone.
There is a lounging, saloon area outside the cabins which features large, tempting sofas. This makes an excellent place to relax and read aware from the sunshine or, alternatively, to make use of the desk and PC station.
Further along you’ll find a dining area where the local Cuban cuisine, mixed with international dishes, is served. There is also a bar where you can chill out at the end of the day’s diving with a beer or cocktail.
Outside of the cabins the Avalon 1 is light, airy and inviting. Avalon 2 features a spacious and relaxed combination lounge and dining room area on the boat. Here you chill in-between dives and read, listen to music or simply chat with guests.
Food is served here, a combination of local and European foods. There is also a bar area where you can unwind with a mojito at the end of the day’s diving.
Outside on the top of the vessel is a large sun deck with a Jacuzzi, a grill and seating where you can sit and admire the panorama.
Hot and cold beverages and snacks are available all day should you become a little hungry between activities.
Diving onboard Avalon I
Avalon 1 features all the required safety equipment. Prior to each dive you’ll receive a detailed briefing from the experienced instructors.
