If you have been to Port Douglas before, please share your experiences, ideas and feedback (Hotel, Excursions, General Feeling,…) in the comments section below, by doing so you will help fellow travellers to plan their next trip ;)

Port Douglas is north of Cairns on the Queensland coast. Cairns Airport is the usual flight gateway; allow a separate road transfer and margin for delays.

In this page you will find practical information to plan a scuba diving trip to Port Douglas:

Where to stay?

I usually use this website to book in advance my hotels in Port Douglas as they usually have the lowest rates I find. I like it because it's free to cancel and change the dates.

Port Douglas is an upmarket destination. There are resort rooms, self-contained apartments and villas, as well as some lower-cost options. Compare the full stay cost, parking and marina transfers; a distant bargain can be awkward for an early reef check-in.

What should you budget for?

Use a dated total quote, then add the items that are not included. A headline boat fare is only part of the holiday cost.

Budget item What to confirm
Reef or cruise fare Dates, per-person basis, cabin/room occupancy and deposit/cancellation terms
Diving extras Guided dives, rental, Nitrox where available and medical screening
Access and transport Reef/park charges, fuel surcharges, flights, road/ferry transfers and parking
Land stay Arrival night, meals, optional excursions, insurance and evacuation cover

Activities and excursions in Port Douglas

Port Douglas has a lot to offer when you are not diving or if you are accompanied by non-divers. Explore the Daintree area, enjoy the town’s restaurants or take a beach walk. Follow signed swimming restrictions and allow a full separate day for longer rainforest excursions.

Travelling with a non-diver?

Silversonic carries snorkellers: the adult day-cruise fare is AUD 328 plus the published AUD 10 fuel surcharge, with snorkel equipment and food. Diving and some transfers cost extra; there is no overnight cabin. Checked 13 October 2026, with listed fares valid to 31 March 2027. Silversonic prices.

Best time to visit Port Douglas

The warmer summer is humid and wetter; the cooler part of the year is generally drier but can be windy at sea. Whale encounters are seasonal and not guaranteed. Choose a dedicated wildlife programme if that is your priority instead of treating every reef outing as a whale swim.

The official Australian cyclone season is November–April. Check Bureau of Meteorology warnings before travelling; sailings can change outside those months too.

Health and Safety

Pack certification and recent dive records, personal medication, sun and rain protection, and offline joining instructions. Confirm rental sizes, dietary needs, baggage limits and battery rules before departure. Bring an adapter suitable for Australia and do not rely on mobile reception offshore.

Tell the operator about relevant health conditions before paying. Queensland medical-fitness guidance explains screening and when medical clearance is needed. Arrange insurance that covers your planned diving and evacuation; a boat safety plan is not insurance.

If you are planning an upcoming dive trip or travelling to Port Douglas, it is a really good idea to invest in travel insurance for scuba diving, because you never know what could happen and when you might need it (because accidents do happen!). I recommend this diving insurance as they offer worldwide coverage and focus on providing scuba divers a quality insurance and medical assistance service.

Select routes independently. Numbers show stop order; arrows show indicative direction. Port and reef references are not exact dive-entry positions.

  • Port Douglas → Agincourt day trip: Port Douglas marina area → Agincourt reef system → Port Douglas marina area.

Connections show the order of regional references, not navigation tracks or guaranteed stops. Weather, permits and the booked itinerary determine access. Read the named boat review for exact joining instructions and any flight transfer.

Principal dive-site references

  • Agincourt reef system: Reef-system reference, not an exact mooring. Silversonic chooses three sites for the day.

How to get to Port Douglas?

Fly to Cairns (CNS), then prebook a Port Douglas shuttle or private transfer, or rent a car. Cairns Airport lists transport choices. A late arrival may restrict shared-transfer options. The train terminates in Cairns, not Port Douglas; confirm the onward road connection rather than relying on an obsolete rail or shuttle fare.

Leave an appropriate interval between your last scuba dive and flying, using DAN guidance and your operator’s requirements. Plan this before booking the return flight, including any scenic or island-transfer flight.

Do I need a visa for Port Douglas?

Entry requirements depend on your passport and status. Use the Australian Government visa finder before booking; a reef tour does not arrange immigration permission for you.

Getting Around

Port Douglas is a small town. You can easily walk from one place to the other if you stay near the main street. Resorts farther south may need a shuttle or taxi to the marina. For the Daintree and Cape Tribulation, arrange a car or organised tour and check current road and ferry conditions.

Before you book

Choose your base and trip first, confirm eligibility and the full fare, then match flights and accommodation to the joining instructions.

Port Douglas planning questions

Does an Agincourt day trip include Cod Hole?

No: do not assume that. Cod Hole is farther north and requires an itinerary that explicitly includes it.

Can my non-diving partner join me?

Silversonic sells a snorkel/cruise fare, with scuba added separately. Confirm any age, swimming or health restrictions and the total transfer cost.

Should I stay in Cairns or Port Douglas?

Port Douglas suits Agincourt day trips and a quieter resort base. Cairns is more convenient for most northern liveaboard check-ins.

Port Douglas is a small, beautiful coastal town of North Queensland famous for its beach and reef life. Its main diving choice is a day boat to the Agincourt reef system, with the Daintree area close enough for a separate land day. Do not confuse this with a liveaboard expedition to Cod Hole or Ospr
