A liveaboard diving cruise on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is a highly recommended activity for any Scuba diver, or snorkeler, visiting Australia!

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth. It stretches along the east coast of Australia and is definitely one of the best diving destinations in the world.

There are day trip cruise vessels which concentrate on visiting the part of the GBR closest to the land. However, in order to truly discover this beautiful natural wonder, you need quite some time to dive on it’s most pristine and most beautiful reefs. Indeed… you have to sleep on the reef! Sleeping aboard also saves the daily journey back to shore. Whether it works out cheaper than several day trips depends on the cabin, number of dives, equipment and included fees.

Dive cruises visiting the Great Barrier Reef offer programs for Scuba divers who want to get their certification or to upgrade to a higher level. Also, there are often cheaper prices for those who wish to snorkel only!

Departures are generally from Cairns, which is a lovely town and deserves your attention. Short outer-reef cruises usually last two or three days; Ribbon Reefs and Coral Sea programmes also include longer expeditions. Compare the actual route and nights aboard rather than assuming every Cairns liveaboard visits the same reefs. Other things that vary a lot are the prices and the luxury levels of the liveaboards. Cheap liveaboard options are available mostly in the form of short trips, discounted trips or last minute deals.

When to dive the Great Barrier Reef?

You can dive the Great Barrier Reef throughout the year, but the seasons offer different trade-offs. December to February is summer in Cairns, not winter. It is hot and humid, with much of the annual rain falling in the summer months; wet conditions can extend into autumn. Rainfall, wind, runoff and the site itself affect visibility, so clear water is never guaranteed by the month alone.

June to August is winter, generally cooler and drier. The dry period continues into spring, but wind can still affect crossings and offshore access. Lower-season deals may be available, yet neither rain nor a calendar month guarantees a discount: compare the complete fare and cancellation terms.

For dwarf minke whales, look at specialist northern Ribbon Reefs trips centred on June and July. Humpback whale encounters have a broader winter-to-spring window. Ribbon Reefs or Osprey Reef?

Cod Hole belongs to the northern Ribbon Reefs. North Horn is at Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea, beyond the Great Barrier Reef. Some expeditions combine the two regions; the regular short Cairns outer-reef cruises do not. Whitsundays sailing and snorkelling trips are another distinct choice, usually arranged from Airlie Beach.
